12.1 FOLLOW A FEEL WITH LEAD ROPE TOWARDS ME & LUNGE

In this session I introduce the lead rope. I start by desensitising him to the lead rope using rhythmic motion. I explain the importance of not allowing him to disassociate by shutting down and blocking me out. If I feel him doing this I do something to get his attention, his ears and eyes will re-engage with me and what I am doing and then I hesitate to reward him for re-connecting with me. Once I attach the lead rope to the halter I teach him how to follow a feel for the first time, which is steady pressure towards me with the lead rope. I explain the increments of pressure; soft, medium and effective. You will see how I releases instantly when he follows the slightest feel on the lead rope, this is similar to how I would teach a young foal to lead, but with a lighter lead rope. I finish the session with his very first basic lunging lesson with the lead rope on. I still have to use the walls of the round yard to help me get the correct direction.
