19.1 Part 1 – DESENSITISATION TO THE LEAD ROPE OVER HIS BACK

Desensitisation to the Lead Rope – In this short video I explain how I go about desensitizing Major Bob to the lead rope for the first time in preparation for belly roping him. Major Bob is not a horse that doesn’t want to move his feet a lot, he would rather go internal and go inside himself. He looks like he is asleep and really relaxed most of the time but he is the type of horse that tries to just pretend everything is okay when it’s really not.

If I was to go any faster or apply more pressure at this point he would explode. He has a super high startle response to environmental sounds, though rather than flight he would choose freeze (and then explode). It is REALLY important I read when he is actually relaxed or when he is going inside himself. When I work with him I keep him actively engaging with me and not allow him to disassociate and block me out. These type of horses can look relaxed and quiet but at some point they will explode when they can’t cope anymore if you allow them to disassociate and then go over their threshold.
