Guiding off the Outside Rein and Leg at the Walk
8.10 minutes – In this video John rides a young horse and explains how he teaches the horses to guide off his outside rein and outside leg while using his inside rein for direction. John explains how he uses the inside rein to change the horse’s alignment and how he teaches the horse to respond willingly off his outside aids. Whenever John lays the outside rein against the horse’s neck he is teaching them to move their front feet away from the pressure and go back between his hands. He also uses his outside leg to reinforce the outside rein cue. Over time the horse will come to understand to move their front feet away from the rein on their neck and stay between the reins.
